William Newman (15 June 193427 May 2015; age 80) was the actor from Chicago, Illinois who played Kalin Trose in the Star Trek: The Next Generation fourth season episode "The Host". He filmed his scene on Wednesday 13 March 1991 on Paramount Stage 8.

Born as William MacLeod Newman in Chicago, Illinois, he moved to Seattle, Washington in 1937 and attended Roosevelt High School and the University of Washington where he graduated in 1956. Between 1958 and 1960 he attended the Columbia University through the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for advanced writing study. Throughout the 1950s and 1960 he served in the Armed Forces and became a teacher for English.

Since 1965, Newman appeared on stages in plays including "The Trial of Catonsville Nine", "Beggar's Opera", "Over Here", and "Strangers". In the 1970s he also started to work for television and film productions, most notable supporting roles in The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981, with John Colicos and Christopher Lloyd), The Mosquito Coast (1986, with Jason Alexander), Funny Farm (1988, with Kevin Conway, Mike Starr, Dan Desmond, Reg E. Cathey, David Williams, and Dakin Matthews), Monkey Shines (1988, with Kate McNeil, Stephen Root, and Patricia Tallman), the drama Hero (1992), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993, with Anne Haney), Tom and Huck (1995, with Charles Rocket), and The Craft (1996, with Cliff DeYoung, Brenda Strong, and Tory Christopher).

Among his numerous television roles are guest roles in Ryan's Hope (1979, with Daniel Hugh Kelly), Matlock (1991, with Dion Anderson, Michael Ensign, Anne Haney, Patricia McPherson, Cyril O'Reilly, Judith Jones, Bruce Gray, and Kay E. Kuter), Knots Landing (1992, with Michelle Phillips), Picket Fences (1993, with Justin Shenkarow, Kelly Connell, Sam Anderson, and Kurtwood Smith), Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1995, with Joe Lando, Chad Allen, Frank Collison, and Hélène Udy), The King of Queens (1999), Diagnosis: Murder (1999, with Susan Gibney and Robert Curtis Brown), Angel (2001, with Daniel Dae Kim and Rachelle Roderick), and The Tick (2002, with Liz Vassey, Derek Mears, Scott L. Schwartz, and Armin Shimerman).

Among his last known acting roles are Shadow: Dead Riot (2006, with Tony Todd) and episodes of Days of Our Lives (2005, with Renée Jones) and My Name Is Earl (2006).

Newman passed away on 27 May 2015 at Hayes Manor Senior Residence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after a prolonged struggle against the vascular affliction, Multi-Infarct Dementia. [1]
