The Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 88) provided more biographical information on Bligh. According to this source, he was born in 1754 and died in 1817. He was an officer on Captain James Cook's second voyage around the Earth in 1772-1775. As a captain, Bligh was known as a harsh disciplinarian. His crew mutinied against him in 1789, setting him adrift in the southern Pacific Ocean.
