For the starship captain of the same name, please see W. Bligh.

William Bligh was a British captain of the Royal Navy who commanded a small sloop-of-war, called the HMS Bounty, in the late 18th century. Bligh became known in Earth history after his crew mutinied. Since then, it had been common to compare Bligh to any captain whose crew was on the verge of a mutiny.

Tom Paris once compared Annorax to Bligh after learning that his Krenim crew was about to mutiny after two hundred years attempting to alter history on board the Krenim weapon ship. (VOY: "Year of Hell, Part II")

Bligh's command was later the namesake for a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, which was named the HMS Bounty by Leonard McCoy in a "fine sense of historic irony." (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
