A wig or toupée was an artificial piece of hair, most often worn for fashion or traditional reasons.
Three three musicians of the hallucinated string quartet, seen by a crewmember, were wearing period wigs. (TNG: "Where No One Has Gone Before")
At one time, it was fashionable for Betazoid women to wear elaborate wigs that caged small animals. The practice, which was cruel to the animals, was stopped when one (unknown) woman stood up against it. (TNG: "Half a Life")
