A warp eddy was a residual effect in space, left behind by the warp drive of a starship traveling at warp speeds. Based on the traces of a warp eddy current, it was possible to determine the heading of the starship that had left it behind.

In 2369, a runabout from Deep Space 9 detected a warp eddy current in the Gamma Quadrant, believed to be from the missing Danube-class runabout USS Yangtzee Kiang. (DS9: "Battle Lines")

While the specific term warp eddy was not used in the episode, in TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II", Worf detected "unusually strong eddy currents" leaving the site of the Battle of Wolf 359. They were scanned to determine the direction the Borg cube had departed Wolf 359.
