W.E.B. DuBois was an influential African-American sociologist from Earth of the 19th and 20th centuries. DuBois fought for the social and economical rights of colored people in the United States. He was also an accomplished writer, among other things.
Benny Russell listed DuBois along with several other authors when Douglas Pabst claimed he could not publish Russell's story because people would not read material written by Negroes. Pabst's response was that such things were for "liberals and intellectuals". (DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars")
