Vulcan port

Vulcan port

Vulcan port was an alcoholic beverage produced on the planet Vulcan. In 2370, Quark offered Sakonna a glass of three centuries old, very rare, very expensive Vulcan port from his personal stock. She declined the offer.

Quark disliked the taste after he sampled it himself later. (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I")

Background

This statement seems to contradict a previous statement made by Spock in TOS: "The Conscience of the King", where he notes: "My father's race was spared the dubious benefits of alcohol," when offered a glass of Saurian brandy by Dr. McCoy. T'Pol also noted in ENT: "Breaking the Ice" that Vulcans don't drink wine, indicating that perhaps Vulcan port is for ceremonial or religious purposes only.

Technically, for a wine to be Port, it must be a fortified wine from the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal (see Port wine at Wikipedia). While many other areas, such as Australia, South Africa, India, and the United States, produce wines like Port, they are imitations and not genuine Port. Therefore, the term "Vulcan port" is a colloquialism, which suggests that the production of Vulcan port, and the production of Vulcan alcoholic beverages in general, are an imported practice not native to Vulcan culture. So, alcoholic beverages produced on Vulcan may be intended primarily for export, or the Vulcans' cultural aversion to alcohol may have dissolved by the events of Deep Space Nine.
