Virgil was a well-known Roman poet. A Latin language quote from his epic poem The Aeneid, "Audentes fortuna iuvat" or "Fortune favors the bold", was featured on the Columbia's dedication plaque. (Star Trek: Enterprise set artwork)
Virgil's full name was Publius Vergilius Maro. He also also referred to as "Vergil".
