Star Trek: The Original Series

All...I think...

The Next Generation

All of Season 1

I must say that the Voyager crew is my favorite crew in all of Star Trek. They are a bunch of good, likable, kind, diverse, multi-faceted people - all with their own little quirks and idiosyncrasies; they are real. Their relationships to one another are also more authentic, more genuine, with more depth. It is almost like they have been real friends for years. Could anyone be sweeter, more awkward and nerdier than Harry Kim or more hilarious than The Doctor or more likable than Neelix? Even though after The Original Series, characters in the Star Trek universe, especially in TNG, have been more developed and acquired more depth instead of being mere caricatures, I think no series has managed to make their characters more realistic and layered as Voyager.

Deep Space 9

I got into DS9 a bit later, mainly becasue I just dont get the point of a space station that doesn't go anywhere in a show called Star Trek. But it has grown on me as the story lines are more serious and darker and intense - having moved away from Roddenberry's rather idealistic and overly positive view of the universe and especially that of the Federation. DS9 introduces us to the darker side of what has always been the perfect organization, the United Federation of Planets and with it Starfleet. I don't think Roddenberry would have been happy with things like Section 31, genocidal wars reaching over several seasons or even the Maquis - not in the way it was laid out in DS9. I think most of DS9 is pretty great except for all those episodes about the damn Bajoran religion; that and all the wormhole aliens which they think are their prophets. I usually skip through those episodes on repeat watch, mainly because they are often boring and just the general concept pisses me off. I didnt like the idea of the emissary and that religion - and with it superstition and fairy tales - were becoming such an integral part of Star Trek to the point of making a Starfleet captain some kind of a holy figure and a central part of the overall story line of DS9. Really annoying.
