The United Nations, or UN, was an international organization comprised of various nation states on Earth. Almost all nation states of the planet were members. It was established in San Francisco in 1945, following the Dumbarton Oaks Conference in Washington DC, but the first General Assembly, with 51 nations represented, was not held until 1946 in London. The UN permanently relocated to New York City in 1951.

The organization was succeeded by the New United Nations in the first half of the 21st century.
