"Uhura's Story"

While the Excelsior orbits a planet on the verge of breaking up, Uhura recounts an early mission aboard the Enterprise.

Background information

  • Framing sequence takes place between the events of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
  • Flashback sequence takes place around stardate 1297.80, preceding "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (TOS).
  • This issue is replete with art department gaffes:
    • Sulu mans the Excelsior's navigator's position in this issue, while Sanderson mans the helm.
    • Saavik, like Sanderson, is shown wearing commander or lieutenant commander's rank insignia, despite her rank of lieutenant. (The artwork makes it difficult to be certain.) Therefore, Sanderson may hold any one of these ranks.
    • The shuttlecraft named "Keppler" in this issue features the call-letters of the Galileo (NCC-1701/7).
    • In the flashback, Enterprise officers wear branch-specific department colors, although it is no later than 2265.
    • Uniforms from both eras show up in some of the same panels.
  • The Klingon commander bears a seemingly "type-2" (Human-like) appearance, except with pointed ears.
  • The sentries on Tally wear thick armored suits unlike anything seen elsewhere in any Trek episode, movie or comic.
  • Kirk and Spock discuss a "treaty" which led to a "cessation of hostilities many years ago." This could not have been the Organian Peace Treaty (2267).
