In 2293, it was assigned to patrol the Klingon Neutral Zone. It was among the starships that would have been assembled for the abandoned assault code-named Operation Retrieve, which would have rescued Captain James Kirk and Doctor Leonard McCoy from Qo'noS. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
Background
The Springfield is visible as an Template:ShipClass silhouette icon on the chart in the Federation President's office. This ship is not related to the Template:ShipClass of starships, which were in service during the 2360s.
While not an official source, Decipher roleplaying game supplements state that this vessel may be a Ranger-class starship.
Springfield is said to be the most common town name in the United States of America, with 37 cities by that name (and many more with variations of that name, such as "Springfield Crossing" or "Springfield Plantation") in over 30 states. It is possible that one of these cities is the origin of this ship's name.
