Saratoga Captain (Margaret Sinclair-Alexander at Memory Beta, the wiki for licensed Star Trek works)

Saratoga captain (2286)

The Saratoga''s captain was a 23rd century Human female. In 2286 her ship was rendered powerless by an unknown alien probe attempting to contact the humpback whales of Earth. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

This unnamed officer, played by Madge Sinclair, is the first female Starfleet starship captain portrayed on Star Trek (despite the quizzical TOS: "Turnabout Intruder" reference where Janice Lester believes female captains are an impossibility). In the Pocket Books novel adaptation she is referred to as Captain Alexander, but there is no filmed evidence that this was canonically intended to be her name. Several novels, including The Star to Every Wandering, establishes her name as Margaret Alexander and The Star to Every Wandering shows her to have served with Captain Kirk before becoming a captain. She later became married, changing her surname to Sinclair-Alexander and she was promoted to admiral. She was also the officer who recruited Kirk to go on the USS Enterprise-B for the christening ceremony.
However, although Sinclair's character is the first female captain seen in Star Trek, she is not the first female character to be depicting commanding a starship. In "The Lorelei Signal", Uhura assumed command of the Enterprise. The first female character depicted commanding a starship in live-action was Saavik in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Saratoga helmsman (2286)

The alien bridge officer was identified in production materials as an Efrosian; his makeup design was reused for the Federation President in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
The helmsman was played by Nick Ramus.
