Daedalus class model

A model of the Horizon that Sisko kept in his office, 2370

The USS Horizon (NCC-176) was a Federation Horizon-type starship in service in the late 22nd century.

A model of the ship was in display in the school aboard Deep Space 9 in early 2369. (DS9: "The Nagus")

Benjamin Sisko kept a model of this vessel in his office aboard Deep Space 9. (DS9: "Progress" et al.)

Appendices

Background

According to the Star Trek Concordance, the Star Trek Encyclopedia (which curiously listed the registry number as "NCC-173"), and StarTrek.com, the Horizon is a Template:ShipClass starship, however no on screen evidence supports it.

Also according to the Star Trek Concordance, the Star Trek Encyclopedia, and StarTrek.com, [1] this vessel was the starship that visited the planet Sigma Iotia II in 2168, as mentioned in TOS: "A Piece of the Action". In that episode, it was stated that the Horizon came "from the same outfit as" the USS Enterprise, but it was never specified if that "outfit" was Starfleet or the Federation, nor was the prefix USS ever stated.

Information on that specific vessel can be found at Horizon.

Desktop model of the USS Horizon

A study model was eventually built for the original Star Trek Chronology by Greg Jein and later put on a stand with a TNG-era communicator to be put in Sisko's office, where it can be seen in the background in numerous episodes, along with a model of the International Space Station, USS Saratoga, and USS Melbourne.

It was also featured prominently in an article on the history of Federation starships in Star Trek: The Magazine, where it was featured as a CGI in Volume 3, Issue 9.

The origins of this ship's name are unclear; chronologically, it is possible the ship was named for the ECS Horizon, a cargo ship from earlier in the century. If indeed this is the case, this information was essentially retconned into Star Trek history by the ENT writers.

Apocrypha

In the novel Starfleet: Year One, Captain Alonis Cobaryn is mentioned as taking command of the Horizon in 2167. It is also mentioned in Worlds of the Federation and the Strange New Worlds VII short story "Test of Character."
