Background information Edit
In early drafts of "Descent," this ship was named USS Valiant. It was Rick Berman who asked for a first-ever alien namesake for a Starfleet ship. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, 2nd ed., p. 253)
If the Gorkon remained Nechayev's flagship following the Borg incursion, it was most probably the ship later seen rendezvousing with the USS Enterprise-D in "Preemptive Strike", when Picard met with Nechayev to discuss possibly infiltrating the Maquis. However, in the Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 471), the Cairo was identified as the unnamed Excelsior class starship in "Preemptive Strike".
For the fourth edition, this was changed to where the ship in "Preemptive Strike" was not identified as the Cairo and it opened the possibility to this ship being the Gorkon.
