The USS Excalibur (NCC-1664) was a Template:ShipClass starship in service during the second half of the 23rd century. She was commanded by Captain Harris during the mid-2260s.
In 2267, the Excalibur underwent a layover at Starbase 11. The ship's number was seen on a chart indicating the repair status of several vessels. (TOS: "Court Martial")
In 2268, the Excalibur was assigned to a fleet war games exercise pitting four starships against the USS Enterprise, which was controlled by the revolutionary (but still experimental) M-5 computer. However, when the M-5 malfunctioned, it caused the Enterprise to fire phasers on the Excalibur at full power, when the ship's deflector shields were at minimum intensity. The Excalibur was severely damaged, with all hands lost. (TOS: "The Ultimate Computer")

Background
The registry of the Excalibur was not confirmed until it was seen on the CGI model in the 2008 remastering of "The Ultimate Computer". Prior to that it had been seen without context on a list of starships in "Court Martial". The registry was first connected with the starship in the article The Case of Jonathan Doe Starship by Greg Jein and continued by the Star Trek Encyclopedia edited by future TOS remastered producer Michael Okuda.
In the original version of the episode, a transposed image of the USS Constellation from "The Doomsday Machine" was used to represent the Excalibur after the ship's destruction by M-5.
This starship may have been named in honor of the sword of King Arthur or the experimental submarine HMS Excalibur (which was named after the sword.)
According to the non-canonical Star Fleet Technical Manual the registry of the Excalibur was NCC-1705.
