In 2370, he served as an engineer and walked into the shuttle bay when several mercenaries from Arctus Baran's group, led undercover by Commander Riker, intruded and fired at him. (TNG: "Gambit, Part II")

He left main engineering when Commander Riker and Geordi La Forge discussed a strategy to escape from a planets force field. Later he served as transporter officer and beamed the away team to the surface of the planet Delphi Ardu IV. (TNG: "The Last Outpost")

He was standing in a corridor and listening to Captain Picard's speech when the ship stranded in a galaxy where dreams became reality. (TNG: "Where No One Has Gone Before")

He was working on the bridge when the crew was affected by polywater intoxication (TNG: "The Naked Now") and when Natasha Yar was abducted by Lutan of Ligon II. While in orbit of Ligon II, his work was overseen by Commander Riker. (TNG: "Code of Honor")

He was also on the bridge when the Enterprise-D encountered a Ferengi D'Kora-class marauder in orbit of Delphi Ardu IV for the first time. He fell asleep on his console when life support was nearly completely down due to an ancient Tkon Empire outpost. (TNG: "The Last Outpost")

Later, he took over for Worf (after Torres) at the operations station when the Enterprise-D encountered Q for the first time and remained on duty at the saucer section while a saucer separation was performed. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint")

Because Sarstedt was the photo double and stand-in for Jonathan Frakes, he can be seen wearing the rank pips of a commander in his first scenes. This was changed for later scenes.

Like the rest of the crew he was affected by polywater intoxication when he passed Deanna Troi near main engineering. (TNG: "The Naked Now")
