Background

This vessel was named after the inventor of warp drive, Zefram Cochrane. Although referred to the script simply as a "smaller ship" and a "Federation craft," the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion revealed that ship's designation. With the following appearance, this unscripted vessel, which was otherwise referred to in dialog as simply "a shuttle," was stock footage originally used in "The Drumhead".

The Star Trek Encyclopedia also revealed that the Cochrane was the Oberth-class vessel that transported Dax and Bashir to DS9 in "Emissary". For more information see unnamed Oberth-class starships.
