Typhon Expanse map

A map of the Typhon Expanse.

The Typhon Expanse is a region of space with unusual temporal properties.

In 2278, the USS Bozeman was in the Expanse when it traveled through a temporal rift to the year 2368, where it crashed into the USS Enterprise-D, resulting in the destruction of both ships. The Bozeman had been presumed lost, and when the Enterprise entered the expanse, Captain Jean-Luc Picard described the expanse in a log entry as unexplored.

However, the explosion caused a temporal causality loop that caused both vessels to continuously re-experience those same events over and over. Eventually, the Enterprise crew realized what was happening and developed a method to send a short message into the next loop with the hope of escaping the loops altogether. Lieutenant Commander Data's quick thinking enabled the ships to avoid the collision, thus finally stopping the loop. (TNG: "Cause and Effect")
