Travel pod 05 was a Federation travel pod that was in service with Starfleet in the late 23rd century, attached to the various orbital docking facilities in orbit above Earth.

In 2273, travel pod 05 was used to ferry Admiral James T. Kirk and Commander Montgomery Scott from the orbital office complex to the refit USS Enterprise. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)

Twelve years later, travel pod 05 was used again to transport Admiral Kirk, Dr. Leonard McCoy, Commanders Hikaru Sulu and Uhura to the Enterprise. The travel pod then docked at the ship's port side torpedo bay. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)

A year later, travel pod 05 was used again to transport Captains Kirk, Scott, and Spock, and Commanders Pavel Chekov, McCoy, Sulu and Uhura, to the newly commissioned USS Enterprise-A. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

Background information

Together with the set for the innards of the orbital office complex, the set for the interior of travel pod 05, as built for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, was constructed on Paramount Stage 17 and cost US$60,000. (The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, p. 95) Rick Sternbach designed the graphics for the set. He recalled, "One morning I got called down to the ST:TMP travel pod set by director Robert Wise, and I arrived a bit shaky, thinking I had screwed something up. In reality, he wanted me to explain to Jimmy Doohan what controls to activate to wake up the pod systems and make it go, since I had designed the graphics for it." Travel pod 05 (23rd century)

During the filming of the travel pod studio model, Future General Corporation staffers Hoyt Yeatman and Alan Harding used rear projection to make Kirk and Scott, even on the stage where the filming took place, appear as if they were inside the craft. Travel pod 05's appearance in The Wrath of Khan was due to reused footage from The Motion Picture.
