Transverse bulkheads were specialized partitions utilized by the steamship RMS Titanic in the 20th century. Designed to keep the ship afloat in the event of a hull breach, these special bulkheads were intended to lower into place, forming a honeycomb-like structure. In theory, utilization of these bulkheads would prove successful in saving the ship even if half of it were filled with water.
In an alternate timeline in 2374, Lieutenant Tom Paris used the Titanic as inspiration when devising a way to protect the USS Voyager from Krenim attack. Setting up emergency force fields between every deck and every section, the force fields were designed to protect most of the crew in the event of a cataclysmic breach. The timeline in which these events occurred was later negated when a temporal incursion erased the Krenim weapon ship from history. (VOY: "Year of Hell", "Year of Hell, Part II")
