A transformer bank was an important component in Template:ShipClass starships, responsible for properly configuring the energy to be fed into the impulse engines.
In 2267, after the USS Enterprise has been rendered immobile by the Metrons, Scotty attempted to feed the impulse engines directly by bypassing the transformer banks, but was unsuccessful in freeing the Enterprise from the Metrons' control. (TOS: "Arena")
