A towel was a type a cloth generally used for drying oneself. Sometimes, a towel may also be used as a bodily covering to preserve modesty.
In 2258 in the alternate reality, a transwarp beaming to the USS Enterprise caused Montgomery Scott to materialize inside the ship's water pipes. After he was finally rescued and escorted to the ship's bridge, he requested a towel. (Star Trek)
In 2354, Benjamin Sisko stepped on Jennifer's towel on Gilgo Beach to cool off his feet after stepping through hot sand. (DS9: "Emissary")
In 2370, when the Trill initiate Arjin arrived early at the quarters of Lieutenant commander Jadzia Dax, he was rather surprised to find her in the company of an alien man named Trajok and wearing only a towel. (DS9: "Playing God")
