A tool is a device that provides a mechanical advantage in accomplishing a task or enables the accomplishment of a task not otherwise possible. A wielder of a tool was called an artisan. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?")

In 2267, Captain Kirk noted that Korob could do with his mind what Humans could only do with tools, such as alter matter. (TOS: "Catspaw")

Hodin commented that the only tool diplomacy has is language. (TOS: "The Mark of Gideon")

In 2370, Alixus commented that the Human body was a powerful tool and was capable of accomplishing much without technology. (DS9: "Paradise")

During his construction of a replica of a Bajoran lightship in 2371, Commander Benjamin Sisko explained to Chief Miles O'Brien that he wanted to use the same tools the ancient Bajorans had. (DS9: "Explorers")
