(written from a Production point of view)
Thomas Cloutier, often credited as Tom Cloutier, is a practical visual effects technician who is Kerner Optical's visual effects key grip on 2009's Star Trek. He has been working at Kerner Optical since the company was formed from Industrial Light & Magic, Cloutier's former employer.
Prior to joining ILM, Cloutier was an electrician on such films as Back to the Future Part III (which starred Christopher Lloyd), Mrs. Doubtfire and Nine Months. On the latter two films, he worked alongside fellow ILM and Kerner Optical employee, Rod M. Janusch.
At ILM, Cloutier's credits included Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, Minority Report (which featured Neal McDonough and Patrick Kilpatrick), The Day After Tomorrow, and Jarhead (which featured Scott MacDonald). He was ILM's chief model maker on Space Cowboys (which featured James Cromwell and Barbara Babcock) and he worked on models for Mission: Impossible III, which, like Star Trek, was directed by J.J. Abrams and written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.
Cloutier's last project as a part of ILM was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, working on the film's models and miniatures. He remained with ILM's physical production departments when they became an independent company, Kerner Optical. In addition to Star Trek, his projects for Kerner have thus far included Evan Almighty (starring Jimmy Bennett), National Treasure: Book of Secrets (featuring Bruce Greenwood), and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (featuring Pasha Lychnikoff and Alan Dale).
