His nickname of "Tip" is said to have derived from James Edward O'Neill of the [[St. Louis]] Browns, a [[baseball]] player in the habit of hitting foul tips. The Speaker was an avid fan of baseball, enthusiastic in his support of the [[Boston Red Sox]]. He helped popularize the phrase, "All politics is local".

Tip O'Neill, born Thomas P.
