Thoron is a radioactive isotope of radon, 220Rn, having a half-life of 54.5 seconds and produced by the disintegration of thorium.
Thoron fields were used aboard Deep Space 9, in conjunction with duranium shadows to deceive a number of Cardassian warships into believing that the station had a full and refitted weapons compliment at its disposal. With weapons systems left in disarray by the retreating Cardassians, DS9 was almost completely defenseless at the time. (DS9: "Emissary")
In 2372, at the First Battle of Deep Space 9, General Martok alleged that sensor readings of improved weapons systems aboard Deep Space 9 were a deception created by thoron fields and duranium shadows. (DS9: "The Way of the Warrior")
