"The Fall of the House of Usher" was a 19th century short story by Edgar Allan Poe.

In Dangerous Ground, on the last day of the year, Doctor John Rawley went on a walk after lunch. In his opinion, the day was "dull, dark, and soundless". Poe used these words to describe an afternoon in this short story. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye")

The pages seen in the episode were from the mystery novel Dangerous Ground by author Frances Sil Wickware. This novel was published in 1946. Information on this story was from page 73.
