(covers information from several alternate timelines)
A targeting scanner (or target acquisition) was a part of transporter, tractor beam or weapon systems.
Shortly after its maiden voyage in April 2151, the targeting scanners of Enterprise NX-01 for its spatial torpedoes were not calibrated, which necessitated several simulations and field tests. (ENT: "Fight or Flight")
Later in 2151, Commander Tucker informed Lieutenant Malcolm Reed that the targeting scanners would be online in about an hour, moments after the attack of an unidentified alien vessel. (ENT: "Silent Enemy")
In an alternate 1944, Armory Officer Reed attempted to use the targeting scanners aboard Enterprise to destroy a facility belonging to Vosk, the leader of the Na'kuhl. He was unable to lock on to the building with targeting scanners, so he used visual scanners instead. (ENT: "Storm Front, Part II")
