I reverted the article back to its previous state as the latest revision included was full of "real world" information that was not described in Star Trek. Uranus is the seventh planet from Sol in the Sol system and the third largest. In 1781, a British astronomer William Herschel discovered Uranus. It has an Soequatorial diameter of 51,800 km and measures 8.686e+25 kg in mass. Six years later, in 1787, Herschel discovers Titania and Oberon, moons orbiting Uranus. By 2006, it has been confirmed that Uranus has 27 moons.
The atmosphere of Uranus is composed of: 83% hydrogen, 15% helium, 2% methane and small amounts of acetylene and other hydrocarbons. The reason for the blue-green color of Uranus is a consequence of methane absorbing red light in the upper atmosphere. There have been indications that the atmosphere of Uranus is still evolving. The winds on Uranus have an average velocity of 40 to 160 meters per second, which can be described by the angle at which the Uranus rotates, that can be explained by the fact that Uranus crashed with another planet-sized body.
Besides the many moons orbiting Uranus, in 1977 during stellar occultation astronomers discovered five rings surrounding Uranus. Later on, during the Voyager missions, additional four rings and two small ones were discovered. The rings are named, from inside: 1986U2R, 6, 5, 4, Alpha, Beta, Eta, Gamma, Delta, 1986U1R and Epsilon. Large quantities of interstellar dust penetrate and surround the rings.
On August 20, 1977 NASA probe Voyager II set out to discover more about the far-away planets of the Solar System. On January 24, 1986 the Voyager II arrived near Uranus and collected approximately 7000 pictures of the planet, rings and its satellites. It has also discovered an unusually shaped magnetic field around Uranus, caused by the tilt of the planet's axis.
