Name origin Edit

Are we sure it was named after a battleship? It was also the name of a famous Samurai, Miyamoto Musashi. That actually could be the origin of the WW2 battleship name. Siyavash 00:35, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

The Yamato-class superbattleships (and the carrier Shinano, which was originally going to be the third of the Yamato-class ships before being repurposed halfway through her construction) were named after ancient provinces of Japan, as were all Japanese battleships of the period (in much the same way as all US battleships have been named after states). Musashi refers to the province of Musashi (today parts of Saitama and Kanagawa Prefectures), from whence Miyamoto Musashi reputedly came, but not the swordsman directly. 23:56, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

That's interesting historical bginfo about Musahi,, but it doesn't address Siyavash's question: viz., how do we know whether the intended origin of the USS Musahi's name was the eponymous samurai or Japanese province? Moreover, consider that maybe there was a Mr/Ms Musahi who invented some great tech breakthrough in the 23rd century, and the Starfleet vessel gained its name from him/her? Far-fetched, I know – yet w/out confirmation we probably shouldn't make the current (and disputed) claim. With, confusion already existing about which real-life, historical Musahi we're talking about, should we state what we think the production staff meant?

I added an incite tag for now. If no source exists for the name, I suppose we could still mention (and link) to the battleship with the sane name. (And sorry for my loquaciousness – it's hard for me to be concise/clear when I'm trying to make a point!! :-/ bad writing...) Cepstrum (talk) 06:59, March 11, 2011 (UTC)

Since nothing has come up in over a year, I have removed the note pending citation:
The Musashi was named for the World War II-era Japanese battleship.
