Suggestions: Perhaps the people we see in this screencapture overseeing the Imperial Senate are the Continuing Committe? Ottens 16:26, 28 Jan 2005 (CET)

I actually thought that myself. When you think of how large the Romulan Empire must be< it seems strange there were only a few dozen people in the room. Still, there is no reference to then being the Committee.- Rebelstrike2005 19:40, 28 Jan 2005 (CET)

To me it seems likely that the Continuing Committee functions like a Presidium. We know the Romulan Empire is a quasi-totalitarian state and we are unaware of the full powers of the Senate, it is even referenced that the Tal Shiar functions without the immediate oversight of the Senate. I would assume then like most totalitarian states there would be a Presidium which operated the government with practical full authority when the Senate could not meet. Thoughts?

Let us remember that the Romulan Empire is supposed to be modelled on the Roman Empire and therefore I would consider the Continuing Committee more like a Tribunal or Supreme Court as we have not seen the judiciary branch of the Romulan Government. If we examine the names and positions of each member more carefully perhaps we could come to a better understanding. The Continuing Committee might also be very much like the United State Senate oversight committees on the various departments and agencies such as the CIA and FBI, which they have some control over by funding/purse strings. Based on the Romans, OK, but not entirely alike. Also, given Star Trek's tendency to track contemporary real world politics, I would analogize the Romulan Continuing Committee to the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China or one of the various other committees of the Chinese government, and certainly not the judiciary.

Removed Edit

  • Or perhaps it functions like a United States Senate committee, such as the powerful Committee on Armed Services. Another possibility could be that the Continuing Committee serves as something akin to the United States Cabinet or the British Cabinet, a board comprising high-ranking officials from various sectors of the Empire that oversee the day-to-day running of its infrastructure.

Removed as speculation. Possibly the whole background paragraph should go, but I'll leave it at this for now.--31dot 23:35, November 3, 2010 (UTC)
