Having grown up in Iowa, my friends get a kick out of the quarry scene - just where the hell does one find a quarry that size in Iowa? Just what the hell do you mine there? We've got coal, but that's nothing anyone would use in the 22nd century. 21:15, January 2, 2012 (UTC)

I don't believe the scene was filmed in Iowa; but wherever it was filmed should be mentioned in the article.--31dot 02:08, January 3, 2012 (UTC)
I think they were speaking of the in-universe sense, given that they said "22nd century" (it's 23rd, of course). As for the what, I'd suggest quartz. It can't be put in the article, but Iowa has lots of quartzite and geodes, and quartz is useful in high technology. --OuroborosCobra talk 02:38, January 3, 2012 (UTC)
I thought the "Quarry" was caused by the Xindi_incident. GregologyNet 10:12, May 6, 2012 (UTC)
Xindi weapon beam

The Xindi probe strikes Earth

An interesting thought, but unlikely. The Xindi weapon didn't hit Iowa; it went from Florida to Venezuela. 31dot 10:22, May 6, 2012 (UTC)
It would be a limestone quarry, as the glacial till of that part of Iowa is all underlain by limestone. I happened to go to Riverside, Iowa recently and saw something interesting. Take a look at GoogleEarth at the southeast corner of the intersection of I-80 and Iowa Hwy 27 at Iowa City, about 20 miles north of Riverside. There is a huge, limestone quarry, with bit limestone cliffs. Those cliffs will still be there in 200 years, and who knows where else in the area they might dig. 18:51, July 2, 2013 (UTC)
