Starfleet? Edit

The various iterations of Starfleet may use military trappings, but they have been expressly defined as non-military agencies numerous times. The existence of MACOs and Picard's statement in "Peak Performance" [TNG] are two notable examples. Starfleet is more of a paramilitary organization, such as a police department or NASA.

Well... Kirk stated "I'm a soldier, not a diplomat". Starfleet is the organization that the Federation runs to if it has to fight a war (against Klingons, against Cardassians, against the Dominion), so if Starfleet is not the military of the Federation, then the Federation has no military - because if it had, it would turn to those other guys to perform military action, not to the "non-military" Starfleet. Which means that, for all intents and purposes, Starfleet is also the military of the Federation, even if some of its members claim that this function is secondary to others. I think the article Starfleet is describing this dual or multiple role well in its introductory paragraph. -- Cid Highwind 07:54, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
