Would it be improper to leave this article as the singular form, Merchant Marine? -- Captain Mike K. Barteltalk 17:27, 21 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Probably not. Maybe it would be less confusing to have "Merchant Service" the main content containing article and link the other two (singluar and plural) there as redirects? --Alan del Beccio 17:36, 21 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps -- but I'm starting to get the impression that Merchant Marine is the more common non-canon term (as it is used in this form in FASA's Cadet's Orientation Sourcebook and Last Unicorn's The Price of Freedom) I know non-canon is definitely not as relevant, but it does match one of the canon mentions -- Captain Mike K. I removed this from the article as it all seems just to be speculations:

Since the references to this Service have been rather vague, it is unclear what capacity they serve in the Federation. They could possibly be attached to Starfleet, or they could have been formed out of the Earth Cargo Service following the formation of the Federation in the mid-22nd century.

Although nothing is known of the prefix "FMS", as was used on the FMS Geldonero, but one may speculate that it means "Federation Merchant Ship (Starship)", possibly meaning that it belongs to the Merchant Service.
