Advanced Ion Drive? Edit

In the TOS episode "Spock's Brain" the female abductors of Spock's brain use an ion drive starship and Scotty comments that ion drive is beyond current Earth/Starfleet technology. But ion drive isn't even beyond our technological capabilities today, at least in principle. What do we make of that? Did Scotty refer to another technology with the same name? Or to a very advanced version of ion drive?--Skon 22:48, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Well, for one thing, "Spock's Brain" always calls it ion propulsion, not ion drive. This may be a clue that they are something entirely different. Also remember that the stuff on the planet was powered "ion". That would seem to indicate that thi has nothing to do with "ion drive", which when used in the Voyager episode seems to have been refering to the modern term. Later tonight I will write up an article for ion propulsion, and I feel the two articles should be kept seperate, since the systems seem little related. --OuroborosCobra talk 00:03, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
Ok, good idea! The two better be unrelated in order to avoid technological inconsistency. But please explain to me the difference you see between "drive" and "propulsion"!--Skon 13:04, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
