Why didnt Chekov like the Cossacks?Edit

Any idea why Chekov spoke so negatively about them? -FC 14:20, November 9, 2009 (UTC)

Because he's Russian? Relations between the Cossacks and the rest of Russia are a mixed bag. At times they are lauded by Russia and the front of expansion, at other times they are treated as disloyal renegades and have mass strikes against central rule. Mistreatment of the Cossacks under the Soviet system was so extreme as to trigger many of them to collude with the Nazis in hopes of getting something better, something Russians viewed as a big betrayal. Cossack/Russian relations didn't really recover from that until after the collapse of the USSR, long after Chekov's lines were written. --OuroborosCobra talk 15:58, November 9, 2009 (UTC)

Indeed, I figured it had something to do with how the Coassacks were seen in the USSR in the 1960s when the episodes were written. Thank you very much for that material, I have wondered this for many years. -FC 22:22, November 9, 2009 (UTC)
