Commander Usage[]

I think it is important to note that the positions, prerequisites and parlance of commanders rank refers to the Earth Human usage, which the Federation is derivative of. The latest edits make this relationship unclear in some ways. -- Captain MKB 23:14, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Feel free to clean it up then. My latest rewriting of the article was to try and organize it from the clutter that it was and clear out all of the stuff that had nothing to do with Star Trek, the most significant of which was all the history behind "Master and Commander" as used in the Royal Navy. As it stands right now, most fo the statements about the rank are confined to canon. A link to the wikipedia article might be in order. -FleetCaptain 23:18, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
A commander can also be the first officer of larger starship or the commanding officer of a smaller ship or star base and some an officer may reach this rank but may not be a commanding officer or first officer like the case of commander Beverly Crusher and commander Deanna Troi. Romulan Commander[]

If a romulan commander is equal to a starfleet captain then shouldn't the romulan commanding officers be called captain too.Captain Stephen Avril (talk) 21:34, January 25, 2014 (UTC)Captain Stephen Avril.

Each military organization has its own rules regarding protocol, so if it is standard within Romulan society to refer to them as "commander" and not "captain", then that's what should be done, I would think. ProfessorTofty (talk) 21:37, January 25, 2014 (UTC)

it could be that the rank of captain does not exist in the Romulan chain of command seeing how admiral comes after commander for them.Captain Stephen Avril (talk) 21:55, January 25, 2014 (UTC)Captain Stephen Avril.

I know a commander can be the commanding officer of a starbase but can they be the commanding officer of a starship you tell meCaptain Stephen Avril (talk) 01:52, January 26, 2014 (UTC)Captain Stephen Avril

Yes, they can. In theory, anybody can be appointed Captain of a starship regardless of rank. Generally, though, it is reserved for those holding the rank of Captain aswell (at least in the Star Trek universe anyway). --| TrekFan Open a channel 02:10, January 26, 2014 (UTC)
