Issues with articleEdit
This page has a few minor issues that I wanted some opinions on. Is there any reason that the entire section near the bottom that begins discussing Earth (i.e. humanity) having changed to being irreligious should be on the "Christmas" page? Seems out of place. There are several pages where it would seem to make more sense. Furthermore, the TNG episode "Who watches the watchers" has nothing to say about Christmas, or religious/cultural holidays whatsoever. I am assuming reference to that episode is specifically about Capt. Picard's refusal to impose a set a false beliefs upon a pre-warp civilization in a wrong-headed attempt to undo cultural contamination? Hardly evidence of an irreligious humanity - but, more to the point, nothing to do with Christmas. I suggest it be moved elsewhere or deleted? Thoughts? - I agree. This whole section reads like a lot of speculation to me.
- Since episodes such as TNG: "Who Watches The Watchers" suggest that Humanity has become largely irreligious, it is possible that Christmas continues in the future as a secularized celebration of family and goodwill, while the traditional Christian observances have faded to a greater or lesser degree. In DS9: "Penumbra", however, Kasidy Yates mentions that her mother would prefer her to be married by a minister. This suggests that some Humans may still have some religious beliefs and that holidays, such as Christmas, may be religiously important to them. In the later Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Strange Bedfellows", Kasidy Yates also tells Benjamin Sisko that she will not participate in a Bajoran blessing ceremony because she did not convert when she married him.
- I have removed it for now as any piece of background information that includes the terms "it is possible", "it may be" and "this suggests" is speculation. If anybody disagrees, please feel free to discuss here. --| TrekFan Open a channel 16:16, September 10, 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your thoughts and editing TrekFan - much appreciated. I am new to editing on Memory Alpha (but have been reading and referencing it for a long time.) I didn't want to just come in and start making big changes and upset someone. Trying to get my feet wet, as it were. I intend to reword the first paragraph as well, I think it could use some polishing. Happy to hear what you think. Thanks again! JohnArcher112 (talk) 20:30, September 11, 2015 (UTC)JohnnyArcher
