Was it composed by David Bell? -- Ben Sisko 22:38, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Possibly. But, IMHO, the tune does have a certain McCarthian flair to it. As an anthem, I find it rather mediocre. Current Earth nations, especially European ones, have much nicer sounding anthems than this one. It probably would have been better for them to go with something like a modified version of the Star Trek TMP/TNG theme that was composed by Jerry Goldsmith. Dsmith2 04:00, 20 May 2006

Agreed, the opening music to TNG was probably the best in all Trek, and it captured the spirit of things perfectly. It sounded like anthems and hymns for nations. When I first heard it, I assumed it was perhaps the anthem of Starfleet. It just has that sound. As for the lyrics, I would agree. But in light of the Federation, perhaps the lyrics are in Linguacode, or maybe some form of "Interstellar Esperante"... a language I would assume to be designed to be pronouncable by the widest variety of vocal organs and flexible for the widest variety of cultural concepts. And naturally, it would be about as successful as the contemporary earthbound equivalent. --JCoyote 04:35, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
While, of course it isn't canon, the comment that there "probably isn't any lyrics, due to the different languages of the Federation" is probably taken from, coincidentally a site I created and maintain (and don't mind being reffed here). (Hey, you think an anthematologist who is also a Trek fan *isn't* gonna include this one?? ;) ) Reason for my lyric-less belief is primarily because, at the baseball game, there are no singers singing it, anthems with lyrics are invariably performed by someone at baseball games (I'm sure we've all seen them, unless you live in Spain or another country with a wordless anthem). There are many national anthems that have been translated into other languages, with varying success, and the Federation anthem could have had that done if it had lyrics, but the fact that no one was singing it (after all, if you're gonna introduce the anthem in that episode, shouldn't you introduce the words too?) has me believe there are no lyrics to translate. Speaking as an "expert" in anthematology, and a "fan" of Star Trek, this is my opinion. --The Time Traveller 23:45, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Given the multicultural nature of the Federation, which includes many languages from the many different member races, it would stand to reason that there are no lyrics, or that there might be a unique set of lyrics for each language.

Removed this bit from the bg section for being excessive pondering & theorising on stuff that isn't all that valuable for inclusion. -- Capricorn (talk) 04:40, May 9, 2014 (UTC)
