A tactical analysis was an assessment report of the combat-related strengths, weaknesses, and overall capabilities of an opposing entity. Starship captains ordered a short tactical analysis report of an enemy vessel to help make a quick determination of the available options in a critical situation.
In 2366, Commander William Riker ordered Lieutenant Worf to perform a tactical analysis of a Zalkonian warship that was threatening the USS Enterprise-D. Worf ascertained that the ship had a formidable armament, comprable to their own Galaxy-class starship. Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge also commented that the ship was as fast and probably just as manoeuvrable. (TNG: "Transfigurations")
Two years later, Commander Riker again asked Lieutenant Worf to perform a tactical analysis, this time of a Ktarian starship that was involved in a plot to capture the Enterprise near the Phoenix Cluster. Worf determined the ship's weapons capability was substantially inferior to that of the Galaxy-class starship and as such was no threat. (TNG: "The Game")
After Commander Chakotay was captured by the Vori species in 2374, Lieutenant Tuvok carried out a tactical analysis of the threat posed to a rescue mission, warning that any away team sent would sustain heavy casualties. (VOY: "Nemesis")
In 2379, Captain Picard again ordered a tactical analysis, this time of the Reman warbird Scimitar, from Lieutenant Commander Worf, when the USS Enterprise-E was in orbit of the planet Romulus. (Star Trek Nemesis)
