(written from a Production point of view)

Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 3 was released on VHS in the UK in two different formats: a two-episode-per-tape release by CIC Video in 1991-1992, and a three-episode-per-tape release by Paramount Home Entertainment in 2000 (taking over the rerelease after the dissolution of CIC in 1999). The original release was deleted on 1 January 1998.

ReleasesEdit

Dates in italics are approximations based on release frequency, where no exact date is available. UK products are normally released on a Monday.

Rental releaseEdit

A four-episode-per-tape release took place in the 1990s, exclusive to Blockbuster Video. This release did not take account of season divisions, and so the volume containing the last episodes of a season would sometimes also include the first episodes of the next.

CIC VideoEdit

New Stars. New Stories. New Worlds to Explore.

With this season, CIC Video moved to a new process for converting the US NTSC master tapes to PAL, using Digital Electronic Film Transfer. This process provided an improvement in picture quality over the season 1 and 2 releases; however, in order to preserve the Dolby Surround audio track, CIC were unable to pitch-shift the audio track to compensate for the difference in frame speed, resulting in higher-pitched audio. (TV Zone issue 25, p. 4) Fan reaction to the change was mixed. (TV Zone issue 25, p. 14; issue 27, pp. 10-11)

FootnotesEdit

  1. Also includes "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II" and "Family" from TNG Season 4.
  2. The cover for this release shows Data with the 14th Dalai Lama and his entourage, who visited the set during the filming of this episode and had pictures taken with Brent Spiner.
  3. The video sleeve adds a question mark to the episode title, making it "Who Watches The Watchers?"
  4. There is an alternate printing of this cover. Presumably they reprinted it at some point so that Beverly's head is no longer in the way of Picard's. Putting the two versions together side by side is quite a humorous sight!
  5. Listed on the video sleeve as "The Best of Both Worlds (Part 1)"
  6. 6.0 6.1 Four episode tape. (This was usually done to keep the number of episodes per tape above three towards the end of a season.)
  7. In the case of sets, the certificate is over the set as a whole (unless stated otherwise).
  8. 8.0 8.1 In feature-length form with "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II"
  9. One of three feature-length videos (along with "The Way of the Warrior" and "Caretaker") released to tie in with the premiere of Star Trek: First Contact.
