The Swarm was a territorial and hostile race which controled a vast region of space in the upper Delta Quadrant.Althought she new that going through Swarm territory would be dangerous, Janeway decided to do so becouse going around it would take to long. Their language could not be translated by a standard Federation universal translator. (VOY: "The Swarm"). Their ships were shuttle-sized but could, in a common effort, disable a bigger ship by swarming an landing on it and then by beaming on troops.
