Subspace markers were devices on board starships which were used to broadcast identifying information about themselves.
In 2368, Geordi La Forge noted that a small combat vessel the USS Enterprise-D was in contact with had no subspace marker. This indicated that the vessel was engaged in smuggling contraband. (TNG: "Unification I")
