Subspace filament

A shuttlepod departs the wormhole, as three comet fragments leave a silithium trail inside

A subspace filament is a phenomenon which can act as a natural carrier wave for faster-than-light signals.

In 2371, a subspace filament was inadvertently created in the Bajoran wormhole, when silithium from three comet fragments leaked inside. The silithium trail left inside the wormhole resulted in a filament which led all the way through, essentially wedging the wormhole open just a crack. This filament allowed subspace signals to pass through the wormhole to the relay station which had been positioned on the far side, and permitted real-time communication between Deep Space 9 and vessels and colonies in the Gamma Quadrant.
