Milky Way Galaxy, astrometrics

A depiction of the Milky Way Galaxy as seen in the astrometrics lab aboard USS Voyager

For the area aboard a starship, please see stellar cartography (section).
"Well, I know this is all pretty dry stuff. Stellar cartography isn't everybody's cup of tea."

Stellar cartography was a field of astronomy dedicated to collecting and analyzing data in order to make maps of star systems, planets, and other celestial objects. One who specialized in this science was known as a stellar cartographer.

After posing as stellar cartographers in September 2152, the three Takret deserters Rellus Tagrim, Renth, and Guri had to admit that they had no knowledge of stellar cartography after being exposed by Doctor Phlox. (ENT: "The Catwalk")

Stellar Cartography was taught in Earth schools in the late 24th century, discussing subjects such as supernovae. At WSA, it was at one point taught by Mrs. K. (ST: "Children of Mars")

Starfleet Academy taught a course on Stellar Cartography. Tom Paris almost failed the course due to his relationship with Susie Crabtree. (VOY: "Lifesigns")

In 2379, the Soong-type android B-4, while under the direction of Shinzon, accessed several unrestricted programs aboard the USS Enterprise-E including "basic stellar cartography, star charts, communications protocols, [and] uplinks from colony tracking stations." (Star Trek Nemesis)
