A station wagon was a type of Earth automobile which existed in the late 20th century.
Station wagons were similar to the common "sedan" model of automobile, except for the rear cargo compartment that was part of the cabin (as opposed to an external "trunk".)
Several models of station wagon were created by different companies under different marques, including the Chevrolet Townsman and the Caprice Classic. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
Shannon O'Donnel owned a 1971 Ford LTD Country Squire station wagon in need of repair. Upon hearing her describe herself as an explorer, Henry Janeway commented that her station wagon didn't resemble a sailing ship, to which she replied that it was in fact a rocket ship. Later, when she commented on the oddity of his self-imposed isolation with all of his books, he replied, "Any more peculiar than exploring the Midwest in an ailing station wagon?"
