Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection is a British partwork magazine which is published by Eaglemoss Collections. It is available in a number of countries worldwide and is authorized and licensed by CBS Consumer Products[1].

Each fortnightly issue includes a hand-painted ABS and diecast metal scaled replica of a starship from the Star Trek universe. Notably, Eaglemoss is producing a sizable number of starship designs that have not been manufactured by a licensed company before.

Ben Robinson, the project's manager, utilizes original CGI studio models for reference whenever they are available[2]. For starship designs without available digital 3D models (or when production-used models are deemed too low-resolution for practical use), designers Rob Bonchune, Doug Drexler, Greg Jein, and "Mojo" Lebowitz have built or supervised the construction of new ones. Some of these models have been recreated by independent contractors including Fabio Passaro's Meshweaver Productions and Ed Giddings of Cgreactor[3].

Models are converted into tooling masters at manufacturing facilities in China and renders of them are often used for the publication's illustrations by its editors in the UK. Reference photographs of studio models, production stills, concept art, and newly-created orthographic views are also used extensively.

Each accompanying twenty-page magazine (measuring 220 × 285 mm) features articles about the design, filming, and on-screen appearances of the original studio model(s). Detailed "in-universe" information about the vessel's history, crew, weapons, and technology is also included. New interviews were conducted with a number of Star Trek production staff for the magazine.

An online version of each issue is made available to subscribers. Products are also available through the company's webshops and are commonly retailed by newsagents, booksellers, and comic/gaming shops.

Mirror universe issues

An extra "mirror universe" ISS Enterprise issue, separate from the regular issues, was first offered to the public through the magazine's UK webshop on 19 November and reached UK retail in mid-December 2015. It is also sold through Eaglemoss' US webshop and was made available for pre-order through North American shops affiliated with Diamond Comic Distributors.

On 20 November 2015, a second issue featuring the mirror universe ISS Enterprise NX-01 was confirmed and slated for release in a "couple of months".

Special issues

Eaglemoss received licensing to release starships from Star Trek's alternate reality as "special issues", alongside unique starships and space stations from Star Trek's prime reality. Special issue models are larger than the standard releases and retail at roughly twice the price.

The company hopes to release at least ten special issues to supplement the starship collection and has made them available through general retail and its webshops. In some countries, subscribers receive a small discount when they opt to purchase them as they premiere.

Three upcoming starship designs from Star Trek Beyond may be produced as special issues.

Shuttlecraft issues

Eaglemoss shuttles promo

Shuttlecraft promo for Germany

Shuttlecraft issues, separate from the regular issues, were first previewed to subscribers in Germany, Austria, and Luxembourg in January 2015. In those countries, "Premium Subscription" members (who paid a small additional monthly fee) received their first shuttle in November 2015. More are scheduled to follow in the coming months.[12]

The shuttlecraft four-pack saw a small initial production run and was first retailed through the UK webshop on 14 October and the US webshop on 2 November 2015. The set was offered for pre-order by shops affiliated with Diamond Distributing Inc. on 16 December 2015.

Shuttlecraft four-pack promo for the UK and US

Initially available only as a four-pack in the UK and US, the shuttles may be offered as single issues at a later time. Alternate deco variants of these models may be manufactured in the future, if further production runs occur. Two more shuttle designs are also tentatively planned for the future.

An eight-page booklet (measuring 150 × 210 mm) which exclusively contains "in-universe" information accompanies each model. It features master systems display illustrations (okudagrams) newly created for each issue by Mike Okuda. These schematics are also printed onto translucent plastic sheets (measuring 120 × 80 mm) which can be mounted on (included) plastic clip stands.

Starship sets

In October 2015, the USS Enterprise 3-pack was first sold through the UK and US webshops and became available for pre-order through North American shops affiliated with Diamond Comic Distributors. A second starship set premiered at the UK webshop on 19 November 2015. A third upcoming set was confirmed in August 2015.

Each set includes a fifty-page booklet (measuring 168 × 216 mm) which contains content covering all of the starships in the set, compiled from the previously released individual magazines as detailed above. The starship models are identical to their earlier releases.

In August 2015, painted resin starship dedication plaques were first made available to the general public through Eaglemoss' online shops beginning with the USS Enterprise-D plaque, previously released to subscribers as a gift premium.

The subsequent two plaques were released in the UK in October 2015 and two more prototypes were previewed in December 2015. The fourth plaque is slated for release in February 2016[13] and the fifth and sixth plaques are scheduled to be retailed later in 2016. An additional (unspecified) seventh plaque may also be added to the lineup.

Gift premiums

Gift premiums (known here as "loyalty gifts") have been delivered to subscribers. These free items include a binder for holding the magazines, a cast resin USS Enterprise-D dedication plaque, a three-nacelled Future USS Enterprise-D model, and a battery-powered, LED-illuminated plastic Borg Cube.

Japanese subscribers received a smaller LED-illuminated plastic Borg Cube (approximating the television version of the cube) rather than the regular UK release (which approximated the movie version). A USS Enterprise Command division key ring will be released by De Agostini as a gift exclusively in Japan, in lieu of a free magazine binder.

Retail "limited edition" binder

Additional magazine binders have been released to subscribers and retailers.[4] "Limited edition" binders featuring renders of CG starships on the cover were released in December 2014. In 2015, the UK version of the Borg cube and the Enterprise-D plaque were retailed to the general public through Eaglemoss' UK website. Other gift premiums may also see retail release in the future.

Distribution issues have resulted in some subscribers receiving their gift premiums months later than the scheduled intervals indicated on the magazine's subscription sites. However, the magazine's Terms and Conditions state that the company has the right to modify this schedule unilaterally.

For American and Canadian subscriptions, the gift premiums are scheduled for much later subscriber milestones than is the case for all other territories.

Marketing

UK test marketing

UK test issue 1

The first five issues were test-marketed at retail in England's South West region beginning in May 2012. The company's website also began to solicit UK subscriptions at that time. Due to unexpected heavy demand and the resulting production and distribution challenges, new subscriptions were suspended at the end of July 2012.

Upon receipt of the first five issues, subscribers were advised that the magazine had been suspended and that confirmation of forthcoming issues from the publisher was pending. Free gift premiums were not distributed to subscribers. This type of early "test release" is a common practice for partwork publishers.

UK and Ireland marketing

In September 2012, a Facebook page was established for the magazine and Eaglemoss subsequently announced that a full UK roll-out of the line was slated for February 2013. New subscriptions resumed on 17 September 2012 and the company confirmed that gift premiums and more issues were forthcoming.

At the very inception of the project, a production run of fifty issues was foreseen, [14] but by the time the project was gearing up for its regular run, the company had plans for seventy issues and displayed a provisional list at the Destination Star Trek London convention in October 2012. Since the provisional list was first shown, a number of possible additional issues have been identified by the magazine's project manager through social media. Residents of the Republic Of Ireland were added to the UK subscriber base in early 2013.

On 9 January 2013, the company announced that the line would be indefinitely placed on hiatus until a new manufacturer was found, following the closure of their contracted production facility by Chinese authorities. The starship models produced by the first factory were used for the UK and Japanese test releases and a number later appeared in large-volume online auctions from Hong Kong. Notably, the early Klingon Bird-of-Prey, USS Enterprise-D, and Future USS Enterprise-D models display paintwork that differs markedly from later releases.

In early April 2013, Eaglemoss sent emails to subscribers stating that the magazine was back in production at a new factory and indicated that shipping would resume in August 2013. This re-launch date was confirmed on the line's newly redesigned website in May 2013 and the first issue was re-released on 21 August 2013.

Data Base Factory manages Eaglemoss' subscription and customer services for the UK market. Eaglemoss and Data Base Factory are sister companies and are both subsidiaries of the Financière Aurénis Group. [15] COMAG UK distributes subscription mailings in the UK and Ireland.

Following CBS' and Eaglemoss' decision to increase the number of regular issues to a revised total of ninety in August 2014, project manager Ben Robinson did not discount the possibility of further issues. In an 8 March 2015 Q&A session on the Collection's Twitter page, he wrote, "It's a question of economics, though. If enough people are buying, we'll keep going. We're already doing more ships than anyone ever imagined. Hurrah!"[5]

Future issues

On 10 December 2015, the company announced the extension of the magazine to 110 issues, excluding special, mirror universe, and shuttle issues. Eaglemoss plans to continue to focus on canon starship designs with few exceptions. [16]. Like prior releases, upcoming starship variants will not simply be repaints of existing designs but will instead feature newly-created toolings (or parts) which reflect hull modifications made by Star Trek's original production staff. "Battle damaged" starships are not planned.

The project manager stated that he considers every Andorian, Borg, Dominion, Kazon, Klingon, Romulan, Suliban, Tellarite, Vidiian, Vulcan, and Xindi ship to be "essential" to the collection and hopes the magazine will eventually reach 140 to 150 regular issues or more. "Roughly half" of the upcoming starships between issue 70 and 110 will be from the Federation and the company hopes to produce all of the ships seen in the remastered Original Series. Some ships seen in the Battle of Wolf 359 will join the collection and there will be more ships from Insurrection and the Delta Quadrant.[6] Due to the immense popularity of previous ships named Enterprise that were produced for the Collection, more are forthcoming. At least two more shuttlecraft designs may also be produced.

Following a successful online fan petition championed by The Trek Collective [17], Eaglemoss may manufacture the USS Titan as a special issue and have contacted Sean Tourangeau, the ship's designer, to enlist his assistance in the creation of a model. [18] Eaglemoss may require the public to pre-order this ship before it is sent into production.

Robinson confirmed that three upcoming starship designs from Star Trek Beyond would likely be produced as special issues in rapid succession around the time of the film's release. He also indicated that his company was inquiring about licensing for the 2017 untitled Star Trek series.

International marketing

English-language magazines distributed outside of the UK are identical to the UK releases. A small number of models with minor painting errors have had these paint issues corrected after the initial production run.

Aside from those countries where it has entered into joint ventures with established outside publishing partners, Eaglemoss has utilized its sister company Data Base Factory for its customer services, distribution, translation, and editorial services for non-English language areas. [19]

Japan

In Japan, the line is published and distributed by De Agostini and carries its imprint on the cover. The first six issues were released in 2012 in a test marketing run, similar to the UK's initial test release. De Agostini's subscriber website went live in April 2014 and the first issue was re-released on 20 May 2014. [20] Outer packaging and the magazine's running order differ from the UK version.

US

In May 2013, the company launched their US website and American subscribers began to receive issues in October 2013. At the same time, the line was also made available for retail sale by US retailers affiliated with Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc.

Special issues are available exclusively at retailers and are not offered to subscribers at this time.

Australia

Early imported issues began to reach retailers in Australia beginning in December 2013. An Australian subscriber website went live in February 2014. Subscriptions and wide retail availability commenced on 31 March 2014. Bissett Magazines Pty. Ltd. distributes the line. [21][22]

New Zealand

Imported early issues began to reach some New Zealand retailers beginning in December 2013. On 9 August 2014, a New Zealand subscriber website went live. Subscriptions and wide retail availability commenced in October 2014. Netlink Subscriptions, a division of Netlink Distribution Co. Ltd., distributes the line. [23] Emails sent to subscribers announced that the 2009 Enterprise would be the first special issue available to New Zealand and was expected to ship on 4 December 2015.

Germany

After a five-issue test marketing run and website launch in early 2014, the magazine fully relaunched in Germany in January 2015. The magazine's running order differs from the UK's. It is distributed by Interabo GmbH.

Austria

Availability to Austria was included in Germany's online subscription launch in January 2015.

Luxembourg

Availability to Luxembourg was included in Germany's online subscription launch in January 2015.

The Netherlands

Spain

On 3 October 2014, the company announced that online subscriptions would begin for Spanish subscribers in March 2015 but this did not occur and there has been no further comment on the matter. No retail availability is planned.

The rest of the world

On 3 October 2014, Eaglemoss announced that they had acquired licensing for all of Europe and stated that the line would begin to be released in the remaining countries of Europe commencing in 2015. The company also stated that it hoped to release the line in other territories in the future but did not offer specific dates or countries. The magazines list additional details for South African, Malaysian, and Singaporean distribution. In a number of countries, retailers have imported issues of the magazine from the UK for resale.

Footnotes

  1. John Van Citters, Vice President of CBS Consumer Products' Product Development, supervises the magazine for CBS and formally announced the expansion of the magazine to ninety issues at The Official Star Trek Convention which was held in Las Vegas from 31 July to 3 August 2014. [1]
  2. Ben Robinson has previously used live-action production CGI studio models to create illustrations for other licensed Star Trek print publications, in the process becoming, at least where the Star Trek franchise was concerned, a pioneer by doing so. He commissioned Rob Bonchune (and others) to render these models for use in the Star Trek Fact Files and its US magazine derivative. Robinson served as project manager, editor, and writer of many issues of those publications (incidentally published by one of Eaglemoss Collections' two original constituent parts, GE Fabbri), foreshadowing his similar role at the Official Starships Collection.
Regarding the availability of production-used digital models, Robinson has stated, "There is an excellent archive of ships from Voyager and Enterprise. Less so with the other shows." [2] To alleviate this shortage of models, Robinson solicited the input of former Digital Muse Effects Supervisor David Lombardi who turned out to still have a partial database of digital models that Digital Muse had specifically constructed for Deep Space Nine. [3] [4] Years earlier, Lombardi had constructed a digital model of the Enterprise-E as Digital Muse's solicitation model for possible use in Star Trek: Insurrection and it was his model that was used for the orthographic views in issue 21 of the Collection, alongside the beauty views of the later Star Trek Nemesis version created by Digital Domain. (see: Sovereign-class model)
  3. New or replacement CGI models that Passaro has provided for the Collection, as identified in social media, include issues 12 (not a new build, but a re-rendered version of the Digital Muse model), 14, 20, 61, 73, and 75.
Praised by Lebowitz for their high level of detail, Ed Giddings' Centaur and Excelsior models were deemed as suitable for use in the Official Starships Collection, as was his 2010 spin-off build of the refitted Excelsior-class which he had built for Bonchune's USS Enterprise Owners' Workshop Manual reference book. [5] New or replacement CGI models that Giddings has provided for the Collection, as identified in social media, include issues SP1, 8, 40, 42, 46 and 52.
  4. When first introduced in 2014, the "Limited Edition" binder with its alternate CGI cover artwork was originally promoted on the official site as a one time-only release and was priced significantly higher than standard binders. Nevertheless, it has been available as a regularly stocked release (at the higher price) in the company's webshops.
  5. In conjunction with the expansion from seventy to ninety issues, Robinson was able to divulge at a later time that former Star Trek Producer Dave Rossi had made the entire starship database of the remastered Original Series available to the publication. [6] In this, Robinson really scored a coup for his project as it constituted the first time that the remastered Original Series ships, particularly those specifically constructed for the production, [7] were made available for products produced for the general public. This availability enabled Robinson to incorporate several of these into the starships lineup past issue 50 (including issues 60 and 63) and the run increase enabled him to slate more for release in later issues. [8] Rob Bonchune contributed new meshes for issues 57 (though strictly speaking, this was Bonchune revisiting the model he had already constructed for Robinson in 1999 which had made its debut in Star Trek: The Magazine Volume 1, Issue 4) and 62 as the remastered TOS CGI models had not reached Robinson by the time the models were first required. However, these models were not quite production-ready as CBS Digital had used Autodesk Maya software for their CGI effects at the time and the models needed to be converted into LightWave 3D, the software package of choice for the vast majority of Star Trek digital modelers. Robinson assigned Fabio Passaro, among others, to this chore. [9] Ironically, CBS Digital had originally bought the majority of the "hero" ship models from Finnish digital modeler Petri Blomqvist but had to convert them to Maya as he had constructed his models in LightWave. (Sci-fi & fantasy modeller, Vol. 26, p. 48-50) If his models were to be used (such as for the planned Terran Empire Enterprise extra issue), then they need to be reconverted back into LightWave.
  6. Following an unsuccessful search and appeal to a number of past Star Trek production artists, it appears that many of the original CG models created for Star Trek: Insurrection have been lost, necessitating Robinson's decision to commission all-new models for the Collection. [10] [11]
