External Support Mode is an operating mode of a starship, meaning a state of reduced systems operation, and is usually brought into effect when a starship is docked at a space station or other facility, and is at least partially dependent on the external support of that facility for mains power and/or environmental systems.

Operating Rules

According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, external support operating rules include:

  • The starship must be hard docked to the support facility, with umbilical connects providing electro-plasma systems power, environmental-support, structural integrity field power, and thermal and gravitational control.
  • Cold shutdown of all primary power plants is permitted as long as sufficient umbilical support is provided for all onboard activity. It is preferred that at least one fusion generator remain online if possible.
  • Partial shutdown of environmental support systems is permitted. Life support services, such as ventilator fans, air-conditioning, thermal control and plumbing must be provided for all inhabited areas of the ship.
  • Gravitational power generation may be discontinued.
  • Shutdown of the structural integrity field and the inertial damping field is permitted so long as the ship remains hard-docked to the facility. It is normally preferred that at least one structural integrity field generator remains on standby at all times.
  • Shutdown of navigational and tactical deflector systems is permitted.
