Star Light, Star Bright was a piece of Earth literature. A portion of this literature read:

Star light, Star bright
I wish I may, I wish I might

In 2266, while Captain James T. Kirk was giving Lenore Karidian a tour of the USS Enterprise, as they were getting to know each other, she uttered these lines. She asked him if he remembered this literature. He responded that it was very old. In response, she said that it was as old as the stars. (TOS: "The Conscience of the King")

As transcribed in the final revised draft script of "The Conscience of the King", this poem would instead have been, "Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight... I wish I may, I wish I might."
In reality, Star Light, Star Bright is an English nursery rhyme. The last line of this rhyme is, "Have the wish I wish tonight."
