Spawn beetles were a type of insect known for their fascinating striations; they came in at least three different colors: pink, blue and green. Spawn beetles could be used to cross-pollinate Oblissian cabbage. Kes kept some spawn beetles in airponics.
When Kes underwent a premature surge of elogium in 2372, she ate several spawn beetles, as she couldn't control her appetite. (VOY: "Elogium")
The spawn beetles seen in this episode were trained by John Baldwin and Karen Thomas-Kolakowski of Critters of the Cinema.
